Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" policies represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The actual challenge confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the world’s top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

The growing economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is split among 27 separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher levels of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
