The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The anticipation around the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team could be crafting a faster-paced experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it pioneered the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths only possible if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, letting players to experiment both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, fans can get ready for more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
