Seven accused individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist organization stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the group was behind targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
