Our Leading Release of 2025: The Artist's Lux Secures the Premier Position.

Initially, Lux may look closer to an arduous scholarly challenge rather than a new popular music project from a musician who just had a previous single was a collaboration with an international K-pop icon. Divided into 4 separate sections and sung in 13 tongues, we have a head-spinning classical-tinged opus investigating female mystery, spiritual ascent, and physical transformation, often through the prism of various saintly figures. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme handled with raw openness elsewhere—is shot skyward here, carried by the lush sound of a full symphony orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a vast roll call of collaborators. The pure audacity by itself renders the work of other pop stars appear rather modest.

Rising Above Scholarly Pretense

That Lux succeeds in escape overly academic chin-stroking feels nothing short of miraculous, with complete praise going to the artist. While this is not her first album to alchemize the past and the present, its ambitions are far greater on Lux, and the balancing act far more dramatic. The element that really elevates this fourth release, beyond its multilayered melodies, rich compositions, and inherent drama, proves to be an essential spirit of joy. Similar to the legendary artist during her height, you find a captivating quality to Rosalía's singing which sweeps the listener into its tornado. When she is breaking your heart in two, you still desire to be right there for the ride.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

That exuberant energy comes forth brightly on the stunning Italian song inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy for more than four moments. Suddenly, everything falls silent, and there's a gleeful laugh followed by a declaration before a hilariously exaggerated orchestral crescendo thuds in like cartoonish impact. The track then shifts into the frenetic single featuring galloping strings, a powerful choir, and a surprise appearance from none other than herself.

"The magic of Lux lies in the listener rarely exactly know—or even want to know—what it will go to next."

Almost every song concludes at a completely different place from how it started. One moment explores the transient nature of fame over a featherlight orchestration only to disintegrating in electronic cacophony. Another, a cut echoing the artist's earlier trap-infused style begins off moody and brooding, featuring prowling beats, before fluttering traditional rhythms and an angelic choir enter to smooth the song's jagged corners.

The Balance Of Art & Pop

Another crucial balancing act of the album is navigating the line of bold experimentation and broad accessibility. This is no surprise that the album has achieved her highest-charting release to crack the Top 5 of major markets: at its core a suite of truly undeniable hits. A song sung entirely in English builds around a chorus that seems to collect more and more infectious melodies as it spins upward. This trick is echoed by a different expansive ballad that expands and constricts, intertwining multiple tunes like a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song seduces with its playful, theatrical drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the cultural honesty of contemporary heartbreak anthems, eviscerating a former partner described as an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout the album, the singing carry a sharp edge, like a storybook character concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

Lux represents popular music on a maximalist scale, a hungry grasp for capital-A Art in an era of looming AI-generated blankness. It eschews solipsism for sublime transcendence, crafting an over-the-top drama that masterfully controls its own inherent ridiculousness. This is a deep source of buried treasure that requires time to completely mine but doesn't seem like hard work. While some big pop albums of the year seemed like a meager meal, this record offers a sumptuous banquet at which the guests at the table, perhaps intoxicated on holy drink, flit from conversations about ancient saints, the profound sensation of heartbreaking grief, and common stories about hopeless partners. It is a modern-day theatrical production from music's truly restlessly creative visionary.
