Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
